Exercise is great for your body but if you don’t take care of your skin while you work out, you could be left with clogged pores that may cause acne. Luckily, there are simple steps you can take before, during, and after a workout to ensure your complexion is and stays clear.
Before Your Workout
Remove your Makeup
The combination of sweat and wearing makeup can potentially cause an excess buildup of oil. Since your pores open up while you’re sweating, you don’t want to block the skin’s natural ability to breathe by clogging it up with makeup, dirt, and oil. Doing this can potentially lead to acne cosmetica, a type of acnes that looks like red little bumps with no inflammation. I recommend keeping some cleansing face wipes in your gym bag so you don’t need to worry about bringing a bunch of different face products.
Even if you’re not wearing makeup, you should still clean your face before your workout. It’s always good to treat you skin beforehand with something that will clean and remove bacteria, like a topical benzoyl peroxide or antibiotic.
Choose the Right Sunscreen
If you’re working out outside, sunscreen is a must- but it’s important to choose the right one. Oily formulas can clog your pores, so instead try using a lighter formula so you don’t have to deal with the pimples afterwards.
Go Light on Hair Products
Many people use conditioners and other products that are heavy in oil and can clog pores; that’s why you often see acne on the forehead. On intense workout days, try to avoid using those types of products. If you can’t do that for whatever reason, at least try wearing a sweatband to keep sweat and product from reaching your face.
During Your Workout
Wipe Down Your Equipment
Even if the surface looks clean, never assume any equipment is clean. Bacteria breeds on these machines, and if you just happen to touch your face just once while working out, someone else’s nasty sweat has now traveled on to your skin. So make sure to wipe down everything with antibacterial wipes before using it.
After Your Workout
Wash Your Face A.S.A.P.
Once you’ve completed your workout, immediately remove any buildup of bacteria in the pores and cleanse your face. Preferably, use a cleanser infused with benzoyl peroxide to prevent acne.
Shower!!
Sitting in your sweaty workout clothes can cause body acne. If sweat starts to build up on your skin, it will clog your pores and prevent your body from breathing. So try to hop in the shower immediately after you exercise. If that’s not an option, wipe off acne prone areas where the sweat develops the most- chest, back and stomach.
Good luck!
